First documented in 1080, Vernazza was named after "Gens Vulnetia", the old roman family whose slaves (once set free) founded the village. The famous square surrounded by porticos, large houses and arcades, and the numerous fortifications spotting the village are witnessing the high economic development reached by Vernazza thanks to trading activities.
The Santa Margherita d’Antiochia church, standing right by the sea, is certainly worth a visit. It was built in a Romanesque - Genoese style in the XIII century.
